In Beast, Joseph was one of Adèle's two accomplices in the kidnapping of Édith Rabatjoie (the other was Albert). At first loyal to Adèle, he is first betrayed by Albert and then vanishes, only to resurface in the final scene of Beast to shoot Albert and claim the Mignonneau loot for himself. In Demon, Joseph summons Adèle with important information, but she arrives only moments too late - Joseph is kidnapped by the Pazuzu sect (under the leadership of Albert), and is given a lethal injection of the plague. TOP Laumanne (Heads, Monsters, Depths) Confined to a wheelchair, this American industrialist is grossly deformed and also obsessed with the notion of life after death. Naturally, he finds out about Félicien Mouginot's work on the subject, and plans to benefit personally from immortality. He enlists the mafia, specifically the mafia chief Coppola, to help him achieve his lofty goal. In a global summit November 1, 1917, in New York, Lindenberg hosts "The Meeting on the 17th Floor" and officially teams up with Coppola. But their efforts fail, and Lindenberg vanishes into oblivion. Along with Mignonneau the banker (alluded to in Beast), Eugène Lobel is one of two villains in the series who never shows his face. He is recognized only by his brown cap, and even in these frontal views (above), in which he is just moments from being killed by the pterodactyl, all we see is a hint of mustache. We know plenty about Lobel, however. Before Beast begins, he is already in cahoots with Adèle's henchman Albert. He attempts to kill Adèle twice: once by shoving her into the crocodile pool at the Museum of Natural History, and once by taking aim at her while waiting for the pterodactyl to appear. We later learn that Lobel framed Lucien Ripol in the murder of the never-seen banker Mignonneau. He also killed Édith Rabatjoie's brother Auguste, in hopes of foiling Adèle's plan to use the Rabatjoie's flying machine to rescue Ripol from the guillotine. Very complicated indeed! TOP Ménard (Beast, Demon, Scientist, Mummies)
Professor Ménard is the curator of the Natural History Museum at the Jardin des Plantes. It is he who first discovers the hatched pterodactyl egg in Beast, and goes on to monitor the creature's feeding habits. He reappears in Scientist as Espérandieu's captive, and has minor roles in Demon and Mummies. His assistant is Antoine Zborowsky. TOP
An old friend of Philippe Boutardieu, Mouginot visits Adèle at the beginning of Mummies, hoping she will introduce him to Dieuleveult. She refuses. Mouginot is an expert in the study of life after death. He plants a small thought-controlling statuette in Adèle's apartment, which causes her Mummy to revive and escape. When Adèle later vanishes, Mouginot turns detective and suspects that she has been taken to a mysterious pyramid in the Parc Monceau. When Adèle is killed by a psychotic and deformed Clara Benhardt, Mouginot freezes Adèle in a sort of cryogenic tank. He is assisted by Adèle's Mummy, but is shot dead by Dieuleveult's hit-man Thomas Rove, leaving Adèle in suspendced animation - and forgotten - for four years. TOP Mummy (Beast, Demon, Scientist, Mummies, Salamander) Adèle's Mummy lived 3000 years ago in ancient Egypt, and was brought back for Adèle by a great-great-uncle. He spends the first three episodes in the series in a display case in Adèle's apartment.
In Scientist, we see the first hint that the Mummy is not quite dead in the form of a question mark over the Mummy's head when the doorbell rings. Finally, in Mummies, Adèle's Mummy returns to life, rescues Adèle from Thomas Rove's assassination attempt, and then escapes into the night. The Mummy is later responsible for shooting Clara Benhardt dead in defense of Félicien Mouginot, who is attempting to reanimate Adèle from a cryogenic state. The Mummy provides Mouginot with crucial information to bring Adèle back to life, then returns permanently to Egypt.
In Salamander, the Mummy communicates telepathically with soldier Lucien Brindavoine and tells him where the address to Mouginot's laboratory is hidden, as well as how to use Mouginot's equipment to bring Adèle back to life. TOP Adèle's long-lost sister. Adèle is reunited with her at the end of Depths while tracking down Honoré Fia. Mireille has been hiding blissfully with Fia in a cavern beneath Père-Lachaise cemetery. With Remoulade, Panade was a clown in the circus for fifteen years. Soon after meeting Adèle Blanc-Sec, Panade hangs himself for unclear reasons. TOP Potétoz (see Troupier, Norbert)
Orginally from Dijon in the south of France, Édith hopes to travel to Paris to photograph the marauding pterodactyl and claim the $5000 prize. Her plans are, however, a ruse: she intends to cash in on the pterodactyl scare by photographing a special flying machine which looks like a pterodactyl. En route to Paris, Édith is kidnapped by Adèle, Albert, and Joseph, who have other ideas on how to get the most out of her special flying machine. She is released by Albert, who is actually her accomplice. TOP Remoulade (see Troupier, Norbert)
Framed by Eugène Lobel for the murder of the banker Mignonneau, Ripol has been sentenced to death by guillotine. Adèle plots his rescue, but Édith Rabatjoie beats her to him, and nabs Ripol from the executioner's clutches in her pterodactyl flying machine. Later, Adèle and Ripol go to retrieve Mignonneau's money from its hiding place beneath a display stand in the Museum of Natural History. There they are cornered by Albert and Édith. Ripol is fatally shot by Albert. TOP
Dieuleveult's hit-man, hired to kill Adèle Blanc-Sec while she sleeps at the beginning of Mummies. His attempt is foiled by Adèle's Mummy, who bursts from the display case in Adèle's apartment in an explosion of broken glass. Suspicious about Rove's intentions, Dieuleveult shoots him dead in the final scene of the episode. TOP Stigmates (Heads, Monsters, Depths) A.k.a. Remoulade and Potétoz, both clown stage names. Remoulade was circus partners with Panade for fifteen years, then joined the Cirque d'Hiver and assumed the stage name Potétoz, performing with two other clowns Arthroz and Glucoz. Troupier hangs himself in costume soon after contacting Adèle Blanc-Sec by letter to ask for help. He is also Lucien Brindavoine's cousin. See also Arthroz, Glucoz, Panade. Zborowsky, Antoine (Beast, Demon, Mummies)
Under the supervision of Professor Ménard, Antoine Zborowsky is assistant curator at the Museum of Natural History. He first meets Adèle Blanc-Sec on the train from Dijon to Paris, and immediately falls insanely in love with her. Thinking her name is actually Édith Rabatjoie, he pursues her avidly throughout Beast, but Adèle continually manages to slip through his fingers. He reappears at the end of Demon, having escaped from a sanitorium where he has been locked up because of his unrequited mad love for Adèle. TOP |
